Meet the Apologia Family
Apologia Educational Ministries was founded in 1994 in response
to some local homeschooler’s request for science curriculum.
As a result, Dr. Jay L. Wile wrote a chemistry course for them,
one section at a time. This course was a college preparatory
Chemistry course based on the lecture notes that Dr. Wile used
for his University students. At that time Dr. Wile's only expectation was to assist some local homeschooling families in preparing their students for college science courses.
Since that time, Apologia has grown into a family-owned corporation
that, with the help of a few selected authors and Dr. Wile himself,
writes and publishes science curriculum for grades K-12. We
now have a large customer base that spans the United States and
Canada, as well as many other countries. Our goal is to
demonstrate to homeschooling parents that it is possible to homeschool
your children in the sciences, using strong Christian, Creation-based
curriculum that will put them a step ahead academically, even
if it is not “your thing”.
Jay Wile
Jay Wile learned about his love for chemistry when his dedicated parents bought him his first chemistry set. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! Although he loved chemistry, he also had many other interests. For a while, he thought about becoming a concert pianist, but unfortunately, his fingers were not long enough (no kidding!). As he was finishing up his high school years, he became extremely interested in the theater and began to pursue a career in acting. Partly because he learned the science behind some of the special effects of the plays in which he performed, he eventually went back to his first love: chemistry.
He went to the University of Rochester in upstate New York to study chemistry, and while he was there, he began working on nuclear chemistry experiments. He became so fascinated with nuclear chemistry that he stayed at the University of Rochester and got a Ph.D. in that field. For several years, he did research in the field under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. This research led to several grants and many publications. While doing research, Dr. Wile was also an assistant professor of chemistry.
Dr. Wile’s love of science is demonstrated by the many awards he has won for excellence in teaching and research. He has also presented numerous lectures on the topics of Nuclear Chemistry, Christian Apologetics, Homeschooling, and Creation vs. Evolution. He has published more than 30 articles on these subjects in nationally-recognized, peer-reviewed journals, and has 9 books to his credit. You can find all of his books on this website.
Dr. Wile’s teaching credits include The University of Rochester, Indiana University, Ball State University, and The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities, a high school for gifted and talented students. He currently spends his full-time efforts creating innovative science curriculum and speaking as a homeschool advocate throughout the US and other countries.
Rusty Hughes
Rusty Hughes and his wife, Cheryl, have been homeschooling their children for nine years. Rusty, an Indiana State certified teacher, has considerable experience teaching science courses, including chemistry and physics, in public school and private tutoring. When in public school, he developed a physics classroom that integrated computer data-gathering equipment and was one of the first teachers to incorporate using a web page for assignments. Rusty’s other interests include coaching baseball, playing golf, and making heirloom-quality furniture in his woodshop, called The Full Quiver Woodshop. Rusty has a website devoted to his family and his craft (fullquiverwoodshop.com).
Steve Rosenoff
Steve Rosenoff’s love affair with science spans thirty-three years. From his humble beginnings as a veterinary assistant, through his early career in medical research, and into his final position as an international consultant in the area of absorbent products, Mr. Rosenoff’s enjoyment of science and learning has never diminished. Known throughout the world for his disposable diaper designs, Mr. Rosenoff has had the privilege of sharing his knowledge with young chemists in Asia, Europe, South America, and the Middle East. Mr. Rosenoff currently holds both a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Boise State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and History from the University of Washington. He has completed over 463 college credits, including coursework in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Bacteriology, Serology, and Parasitology. Mr. Rosenoff, a Washington State certified teacher, is currently pursuing a Masters degree in science education.
Marilyn Durnell
Marilyn Durnell resides near Greenfield, Indiana, with her husband, Stan, where they home schooled seven of their eight children. For many years, Marilyn has taught elementary and secondary science and math to classes of home schooled children. During this time, she has also tutored home schooled, privately schooled and publicly schooled children, and adults. In 1998, Marilyn and Dr. Jay L. Wile co-authored a biology text book specifically designed for home schooled children
Stan and Marilyn have been very active in the leadership of the Christian home schooling community in Indiana for many years, having served as support group leaders, regional representatives and members of the board of directors of the Indiana Association of Home Educators. Stan and Marilyn believe that God has given them, as parents, the responsibility for the teaching and training of their children. (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) It has been their desire to nurture them so that the character of Christ might be developed within them. (I Timothy 1:5)
Marilyn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Jeannie Fulbright
Jeannie is a homeschooling mother of four with a love for God’s Word, educating her children, science, and encouraging women. After graduating from the University of Texas in 1991, she married her husband Jeff, who is a practicing attorney in Georgia.
Though her primary and most consuming occupation is educating her four children, including one with dyslexia, she devotes time to producing these delightful, field-tested elementary science courses for Apologia.
Having been a pharmacy/kinesiology major at the University of Texas, her love of science inspired her to write these courses after discerning a tremendous need for easy-to-use, in-depth science curricula for young homeschoolers; something that fascinated both parents and children, glorified God as it explained science, was thorough and detailed but didn’t require a lot of preparation or a teacher’s manual and could be used with several children at different academic levels. She tried library books, but found that the scientific terminology and wording couldn’t keep her young children’s attention. She also wanted something more organized than sorting through a stack of books. One of her desires also concerned her scientifically-inclined, highly intelligent dyslexic child who needed a course that would easily satisfy his special needs.
Motivated to focus on one subject at a time, she sat down to write an astronomy book that she could simply snuggle up on the couch with and read to her children. Being highly influenced by Charlotte Mason and the living books philosophy, she wrote each sentence as if she were chatting with her children, seeking to pass along her excitement for the subject and a love for God through engaging conversational style writing. Though the information is challenging, the coursework is designed to allow students to express their learning on their own level – thus, a six year old, a twelve year old and a special needs student can all do the course together, using their own learning style and mode of expression in their course notebook. She has now finished four books in the series and plans to continue writing these courses that serve to ground students (and parents!) in their faith as they learn science from a creationist perspective.
In addition to being available by email to answer questions from homeschool moms and children, she also carves out time each year to write for various magazines and publications, and speak both locally and nationally to various women’s groups on educating children, science, marriage, health and fitness and other topics. Sherrie Payne
Sherrie, the mother of six children, began homeschooling in 1983. There were many years when she taught not only her own children, but others as well. For two years, her classroom held eleven children ranging in age from preschool through high school. This experience gave her insight and perspective on teaching several grade levels at once.
Around the World in 180 Days is a curriculum she developed for her multi-grade home school. Using a form of the notebook approach method, this K-12 study will take the student through the geography, history, religion, and culture of all seven continents. As each continent is being studied, students will also study the current events going on in the area.
Sherrie’s six children have now all graduated from their home school. As adults, her children now include a policeman, a lawyer in the Air Force JAG corps, a kindergarten teacher, a college senior at Anderson University and two stay-at-home moms who are already eagerly looking forward to becoming ‘official’ homeschooling families. So far, the grandchildren count is at seven grandchildren.
Sherri Seligson
Sherri has always had a love for the ocean and began snorkeling and diving while young. After receiving a degree in biology/Pre-med, Sherri worked as a marine biologist at The Living Seas in EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World. She was involved in collecting and maintaining coral reef animals, especially focusing on fish nutrition and marine predator care. During this time, she completed research on shark behavior and was the first individual representing Walt Disney World to have research published in a scientific journal. Sherri has written several articles for marine related magazines such as Tropical Fish Hobbyist and Aquarium Magazine. For the last 15 years, she also has taught marine biology seminars and led field trips for public, private, and homeschooled students. She and her husband, David, live in Orlando and have been homeschooling their four children for eleven years.
Sherri has a very motivated heart for teaching students the importance of studying God’s creation and equipping them to give an answer for their faith.
